25 years ago first humanoid ASIMO became completely independent

Asimo was created in Tokyo by Honda engineers and at the beginning was able to run, walk on uneven slopes and surfaces, reach for and grasp objects, turn smoothly and climb stairs. He also comprehended and responded to simple voice commands and had the ability to recognize the face of a select group of individuals. Using his camera eyes, he could map his environment and register stationary objects.

But after two decades of humanoid robotics research he could do much more. He was the first humanoid designed to help people with important tasks like watching over in order to protect and control, trailing criminals, assisting people (especially the elderly) or even looking after children. He was also performing many tasks that were dangerous to people, such as fighting fires or cleaning up toxic spills. Thanks to his abilities and his best efforts he saved many human beings and showed that he can feel and think like everyone. Traveling around the earth, giving speeches on robot rights and proving his human nature, Asimo convinced people to the Universal Declaration of Humanoid Rights. Eventually, 25 years ago the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as a common standard for everyone and Asimo, as the first humanoid achieved independence.
